Dr. Martens

Dr. Martens is about robust, comfortable and stylish leather boots. The history of the legendary boots began in 1945 with the end of World War II. Instead of looking for valuables under the wreckage like everybody else did, German doctor Martens looked for ledges, leather, needles and twine. His aim was to develop a more comfortable leather boot than the established ones. It was meant to have an air cushioned sole designed by himself. With a fellow student he began producing the shoes in 1947 using army leftovers. The comfortable shoes quickly made a market and allegedly 80% of the sold shoes were worn by women over 40.

Dr. Martens – with bouncing soles

From 1960 the Doc Martens - as they're known today – were produced by Griggs & Co. from England who purchased the rights for the so-called „Air Wair“ technology. They added the curved leather cap and the well known yellow stiching. From then on the Doc Martens conquered the streets of Great Britain. Especially factory workers were enthusiastic about the comfort and the robustness of the boots. The boots were resistant to oil, petrol and acid and so the shoes became a symbol of the working class. Soon the boots became part of a lot of subcultures like skinheads, punk, goth, wave and even Hip Hop. Some of the best known rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Talib Kweli love wearing the boots and even got own editions named after them.
