Unrivaled. That's how the Golden State Warriors enter the 2019 NBA playoffs. Much like last year Steph Curry and friends are the overwhelming favorites to win the title which would complete the three-peat of three championships in a row. Is there anyone capable of stopping a healthy Golden State team?
Let's be frank here. The Warriors in their current constellation at full strength are unbeatable in a 7-game series. A lot of things have to go wrong in the bay area before anyone even comes close to eliminating them. And even though we have seen crazy things on a basketball court including shocking upsets, bad refereeing and buzzer beaters, in a long series the better team always prevails. And the Warriors simply are the best team in the NBA.
From an offensive point of view Golden State may well have the most potent starting five in NBA history. Even haters must acknowledge that the Warriors can only be prevented from winning their seventh championship by having a catastrophic collapse or injuries to their star players.
Even without DeMarcus Cousins the Warriors would have been clear favorites for the title. But with him, there is simply no stopping them. They now have 5 All-Stars in their starting line-up which is at least three more than anyone else has.
Of course, Cousins does not fit the long term plans of the defending champion. He's too expensive and the Warriors already have three players contending for max contracts: Curry, Durant and Thompson. But Cousins as a rental for half a season for a bargain price? How could anyone say no to that. It was a low-risk high-reward experiment and the Warriors clearly won out.
Early concerns that the often volatile center might break the team chemistry in Oakland turned out to be unfounded. Even though DeMarcus hasn't lost one bit of his grumpy self he seems to get along with the rest of the team just fine. Add the extra motivation a championship ring (his first) brings and Cousins might just be the one thing that prevents boredom and complacency for the Warriors which is their only real weakness.
If head coach Steve Kerr had any more weapons at his disposal he would have to be investigated by the FBI. The starting five of the Warriors is an accumulation of talent usually reserved for the All-Star Weekend or Olympic competition.
We can only advise all basketball fans to watch the Warriors closely this season. It's probably the last time you will see them in this constellation. Durant, Thompson and Cousins will all be free agents this summer and there's a good chance none of them will be back after the Warriors win the championship.
So, are we saying the third championship in a row is a done deal? Honestly, we can not think of any scenario where the Warriors lose in a 7-game series. Remember the part in 'Infinity War' when Doctor Strange said the Avengers lose against Thanos in 14.000.605 different scenarios and win only in 1? The rest of the league would love those chances.
Here we put everything together a real Warriors fan needs. From official jersey and shorts, to fan t-shirts and socks but also signature shoes from Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. Get yours!
