First released in 1990, the AIR JORDAN 5 is known as the fifth signature performance shoe of Michael Jordan. At that time the Chicago Bulls were exposed to the utter dominance from the Detroit Pistons. Not even 47 points from MJ were enough to knock them down – too little, too late. That also meant they had to face elimination the third time straight on hand of the Bad Boys featuring Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman. The final stop: Eastern Conference Finals. But they would get their redemption eventually. Six times to be exact.
Inspired by the „Mustang“ combat aircraft, innovative features particularly in style along with performance ability debuted. Designed by Nike-designing legend Tinker Hatfield, a lot of hints deliberately featured, especially on the midsole's „teeth“. Mesh windows on the shoe's side provide for an amazing breathability while the AJ V's tongue is reflective. Furthermore the transparent rubber outsole had its first appearance on a Jordan shoe. Also debuting, the lace lock-system awarded the Jordan signature its unique and recognizable look. Apart from the outward appearance, the lock-system also fulfilled functional purposes.
