Lacoste – high-quality sportswear
For over eighty years, Lacoste has been known for luxurious sports fashion – and is easily recognisable by its sewn-on crocodile. The founder of the brand was the French tennis player, René Lacoste. Thanks to his multiple successes at the French Open, US Open and Wimbledon, he was very well known. In any case, he knew what mattered for good tennis clothing – and how it could best support players in a match. In 1927, Lacoste designed his most famous product: the polo shirt. Previously it had been the custom to play tennis wearing a white shirt and white blazer – which was probably not only rather warm but also restricted movement. Lacoste arrived on the court wearing his short-sleeved tennis shirt tailored to his own needs. And success came quickly afterwards.
Polo shirts conquer the world
In spite of the popularity of this new type of tennis top, it took a few years until large-scale production was possible. In 1933, Lacoste entered into a deal with the French knitwear manufacturer, André Gillier, which enabled the shirt to be mass-produced. "La chemise Lacoste” was then registered as an official brand, and the company was officially founded in 1933. It began to be successful and, little by little, the range was expanded. In 1958 came children’s clothing and a style of tennis shoe which scored points thanks to its lightweight design. Lacoste had the collar for his polo shirt patented in 1961. Nowadays, in addition to shoes and clothing, the brand also offers leather goods, perfume, household textiles and accessories including watches, glasses, umbrellas, and so on.
Lacoste and the history of his logo
Lacoste’s logo is one of the most famous in the world. From the outset, the clothing manufacturer did not hide his logo, but was the first to place it prominently, and to sew it onto items rather than to embroider it. But why is it a green reptile? This is the story: in 1923, Lacoste was in Boston for a tennis match. Before the game he was in town with a team-mate, and he saw a crocodile leather suitcase. His team-mate promised to buy him this suitcase if he won the match. Lacoste lost, and did not receive the suitcase. Journalists, however, gave him the nickname "the crocodile”. After that, he had a textile copy sewn onto one of his tennis shirts.
Licence agreements with the US sports brand
In 1952, the French brand concluded a licence agreement with Izod, a US sportswear brand. The resulting brand, Izod Lacoste, was sold exclusively in the USA and was branded with the reptile. After the two brands separated from one another in 1990, the logo disappeared, but Izod is still sometimes associated with it.Lacoste at KICKZ
