A quiet place

Not much has happened for the Heat this summer. Dwyane Wade and Wayne Ellington both extended their contracts. That's it. The team had zero flexibility under the salary cap after they secured the rights to James Johnson, Dion Waiters last year and Hassan Whiteside and Tyler Johnson the year before that.

Nevertheless, this inactivity does not automatically mean a step backwards. There are several reasons for Heat fans to be optimistic about the 2018-19 season.

For one thing, both James Johnson and Hassan Whiteside have recovered from their injuries, which have kept them from playing at their best last season. Also the Heat play in a conference that is wide open except for the first two or three spots. And Dwyane Wade will do his utmost to get the Miami Heat into the playoffs for the final time in his farewell season.

One last time

"This is it. I've given this game everything that I have, and I'm happy about that, and I'm going to give it for one last season, everything else I have left."

Chills. One of the greats is leaving the NBA after this season. Dwyane Wade. What the Bulls were for Michael Jordan and Larry Bird for the Celtics is Dwyane Wade for the Miami Heat. The figurehead of a whole franchise. Forever.

Miami's career leader in points, assists and steals will likely come off the bench in his final season, rarely exceeding the 30-minute mark. The 36-year-old point guard known as "Flash" has lost quite a bit of explosiveness and athleticism. Despite this, Wade's last year in Miami is more than just a symbol of loyalty and perseverance. The Heat are knocking on the East's playoff door and the experience of their GOAT could make the small difference between post-season and early holidays.

WINSLOW

Although Miami has had to sit idly by during all trades and free agent signings this off-season, their chances for playoff participation look pretty good.

The team's young core of Josh Richardson, Tyler Johnson, Justise Winslow and the super athletic Bam Adebayo, all played a key role in this. If you exclude Wade, the Heat are a young, athletic team, whose front office prepared the rebuild after the retirement of their GOAT years ago.

Of course that's not enough to reach the Conference Finals, let alone win a championship. But the core of the team is young, talented and hungry and will be back in the East in the not too distant future. Not yet this season though.
