Warriors of the East

Looking at the Philadelphia 76ers starting five you can't help but wonder why this team is not ruling the East like Golden State is ruling the West. With four All-Star caliber players this is probably the best startine line-up in the Eastern Conference with talent for days. So why can't they dominate their competition?

The short answer is team chemistry. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid have only been playing effectively together for about a year. Butler joined them a couple of months ago, Harris has been with the team only for a few weeks. With the exception of Simmons and Embiid most of the roster has been overhauled through trades. The Sixers' stars need time to find themselves and learn how to play off eachother.

In the meantime the Sixers will win most of their games by sheer talent alone. Most notable is extrovert big man Joel Embiid, who is without a doubt the best center in the East right now.

JOEL EMBIID

Joel Embiid needs a new nickname. "The Process" is officially over. The 24-year old center has evolved into one of the most versatile big men in the league. In the lowpost he is nimble and reminds us of a young Hakeem Olajuwon. He hits his midrange jumpers as fallaways and turnarounds without breaking a sweat. And even from three point distance he is a reliable shooter. There are not more than a handful of centers in the world who can do this.

The fact that Embiid is not exactly a shy and quiet person just adds to his popularity in Philadelphia. He does not hold back and is not afraid to speak his mind about older, more experienced veterans. But what does the future hold for the Cameroonian national player? Will he stay with the Sixers?

Fans can feel at ease. Phillies' front office secured Embiid until 2023. That's even more important considering Ben Simmons is the motor of the offense, but Embiid is the heart. The Sixers play at their best, when they run the offense through him and feed off his energy.

As stated above the Sixers have one of the most potent starting line-ups in the league, which has enough firepower to put them over the top in the East and get them into the Finals. Unfortunately the whole construct is anything but stable.

Wing players Tobias Harris and Jimmy Butler are only under contract until the end of the season. Harris will become an unrestricted Free Agent and Butler has a player option which he will probably exercise to negotiate a new contract (read higher salary). Both players will want to see max money come summer. It's completely out of the question to max out both Harris and Butler. There's just not enough money to go around. That means the Sixers will have to part with at least one of their brand new acquisitions.

That decision will have to be made in the summer. Right now the Sixers have other problems. While other teams know eachother inside and out, the 76ers are still trying to integrate Harris and Butler into their offense. The fact that they could lose both players to free agency in a couple of month surely does not help.
