Unrivaled. That's how the Warriors start the 2018/19 campaign. Of course you have to play first and injuries have already thwarted many title favorites in the pasted. But who could stop a healthy Golden State team?
Let's not even talk about DeMarcus Cousins (yet). Even without their newly acquired All-Star center, the Warriors are still the measure of all things in the NBA. Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are all in their prime. No one is still too young, no one is already too old. Absolutely perfect conditions for a successful title defense.
From an offensive point of view this team is without a doubt the best we have ever seen on a basketball court. Even haters must acknowledge that the Warriors are a team that can only be prevented from winning the championship by having a catastrophic collapse.
Let's be clear. The Warriors have nothing to lose here. Even without Cousins they would be the strongest team in the league and clear title favorites. On top of that they have the best (albeit injured) center in the league, who can take his time recovering and will be healthy come playoff time at the latest.
Of course, Cousins does not fit the long term plans of the defending champion. He's too expensive and the Warriors already have three players contending for max contracts: Curry, Durant and Thompson. But Cousins for half a season for a bargain price? Nobody says no to that.
Even DeMarcus Cousins can only draw benefits from this situation. The Warriors are not dependent on him and the pressure to get back from his injury as quickly as possible is low. He can really take his time. When he is healthy, he has three elite scorers to relieve him of the offensive load. That's three times as much as he is used to. Cousins plays 15 to 20 minutes on average and wins his first championship not breaking a sweat. If everything goes according to plan that is.
Head coach Steve Kerr can make the most of everything. With DeMarcus Cousins the Warriors would have 5 potential All-Stars. In their Starting Five! This has never happened before in NBA history.
But it would be presumptuous to claim that the Warriors are just the sum of their talented single players. This group boasts real team spirit. The ball travels from right to left, up and down, from coast to coast. They look for the open man and find him almost every time. Individual actions are rare. Each player puts himself in the service of the team.
We can only advise all basketball fans to watch the Warriors this season. It's probably the last season you will see them in this constellation. Durant, Thompson and Cousins will be all free agents next summer.
Here we put everything together a real Warriors fan needs. From official jersey and shorts, to fan t-shirts and socks but also signature shoes from Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. Get yours!
