Lift off

The Rockets came so close last year. After 7 games they finally had to bow to the Warriors and more than a few claim that the injury-related loss of Chris Paul in games 6 and 7 was the deciding factor.

Now Harden and Co. are coming back with a vengeance. With Carmelo Anthony, they have a prominent newcomer who offensively is still among the best at what the NBA has to offer. But let's face it, the one thing the Rockets had enough of last year was offense. On the defensive end, however, Melo remains an enigma. The departures of defensive specialists Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute therefore weigh even heavier. To top it all off James Harden is legendary for his defense for all the wrong reasons.

In a Western Conference, which has become even stronger, we're not sure the Rockets have improved. Nevertheless, you should not bet against the incumbent MVP. James Harden proved time and time again that he can win games almost single-handedly once he finds his rhythm.

The Melo Situation

After the failed experiment in Oklahoma City, there were not many clubs interested in Carmelo Anthony. Least of all the Thunder who traded Melo to the Atlanta Hawks, who in turn bought him out of the contract and thus made him a free agent.

What did not work in Oklahoma they now try in Houston. They want Melo to fully serve the team and submit to the leadership of Harden and Paul. Will this work?

Melo says yes, but set conditions from the very start. He demanded more touches and refused to come off the bench. Not ideal conditions. It looks like he has changed his mind - for now - and is embracing the role of Sixth-Man. But how long will that last? Meanwhile, the Rockets need the 34-year-old to close the gap left by the departure of Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute. Especially defensively, the Texans are weaker than the year before. Whether Melo's offensive power can compensate this remains to be seen.

If you ignore the Warriors, the Rockets on paper have the best offensive team in the league. Unfortunately, the game is not played on paper but on the court which has an offensive and a defensive side. The latter will cause problems for the Rockets due to the fact that two of their best defenders left the team.

Clint Capela can not be expected to defend on his own. The man has only two arms. And running the competition into the ground, works only in the regular season. When the game slows down in the playoffs, people need to be able to play with their backs to the hoop. Actually, Carmelo Anthony is exactly the player you need for that.

That's what the Oklahoma City Thunder originally thought as well, but they quickly realized they'd be better off without Melo. That's saying something. If the same thing happens on the Rockets, it's over with their title dream 2019.
