The big irrelevant

The NBA is always the most fun when the Knicks play well. That's just a fact. The league needs the boiling Madison Square Garden, the foul-mouthed Spike Lee, and the city that never sleeps to love and to hate.

Unfortunately the Knicks are no longer an NBA elite team. Through countless questionable front office moves and overall lack of talent they have become largely irrelevant. The only glimmer of hope was a 2.21-meter Latvian who has revolutionized his position in just three years. He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks to open cap space.

What does that mean exactly? It means the New York Knicks have given up on the season and have entered the full "tank" mode. By losing a lot of games they now hope to get a good position in the upcoming draft.

A new beginning

By trading Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. the Knicks have lost their two best players to the Dallas Mavericks. Even though nobody knows if "the unicorn" will ever be the same after his devastating injury, the trade is considered a 'win' for the Mavs. At least until summer comes around.

Come summer we will know what position the Knicks will have in the draft. Will they be able to select coveted Duke superstar Zion Williamson? The cap room the Knicks have now by offloading Porzingis and Hardaway is good for two max salary slots. In theory that means the Knicks could sign both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving who will become free agents this summer.

Even though it does not look that way at first glance the Knicks have taken a big step forward by trading the big Latvian. Signing two max guys like Durant and Irving would immediately make them competitive in the Eastern Conference. Let's see how it works out.

New York fans should not get too accustomed to current players on the Knicks roster. The Knicks are looking to catch bigger fish this summer and have the cash to get two of them in one haul. Everyone else is expendable.

We anticipate the style of play to be pure chaos until the end of the season. The playoffs have become an unreachable goal and since there is nothing left to play for, players will be looking to boost their own stats. Especially the young guys will try to prove their worth to get a prominent spot on next year's roster.

This season can not be salvaged for the Knicks, but the future looks promising as they are already preparing for one of the most crucial summers in franchise history.
