Adidas Gazelle
The Adidas Gazelle is one of the most famous trainers to date and, with endorsements from celebrities left, right and centre, who can be surprised?
Noel Gallagher once had around 100 pairs of vintage Adidas trainers, and the Gazelle was one of the most common in his collection.
The Gazelle was part of a line of Adidas shoes named after animals. Others include the ‘Panther’ and the ‘Jaguar’.
The Gazelle was the first Adidas trainer to be made of suede instead of leather.
Dating back to the middle of the 1960s, the Adidas Gazelle has become a fashion icon rather than merely a sports shoe. Rarely has any trainer had such a subculture following, celebrity interest and general fan base as the Adidas Gazelle, and because of this, the Gazelle will forever be one of the world’s most successful items of clothing.
To list all the famous people that have sported the Adidas Gazelle would be an impossible task – although there have been a few that have truly catapulted the trainers to stardom. Take Bob Marley for example: one of his most famous shots is of him playing football in a torn-up recreational field. Or maybe the Beasty Boys, Kate Moss, Noel Gallagher… basically anyone who was anyone over the last 50 years.
The Adidas Gazelle has affected more sub cultures that most other shoes that have been created. It’s hard to say that 90s footwear was dominated by one pair of trainers, but if any come close, it has to be the Gazelle, as it was pushed forward by the likes of Trainspotting, Brit-Pop and football culture.
