Stüssy, as the brand you know today, was created in the early 1980’s by its namesake Shawn Stüssy. A born surfer, at the age of 13 Shawn started to shape his own boards and sell them out of his car along the California coast. Signing his name with a broad tip marker, Shawn sold boards, shorts, caps and t-shirts that all bore the now famous Stüssy logo. As the ‘surfer’ trend spread from the beach to the streets, Stüssy expanded from a car to a flagship store; and before long began opening locations across America, Europe and Asia.
Stüssy - Worldwide since 1980 The success of the brand is often attributed to their diverse collections and adaptive style. Drawing inspiration from numerous subcultures and genres, Stüssy has designed for surfers, skaters, hip-hop collaborators, punks and other street groups. Taking inspiration from a range of sources has allowed Stüssy to stay at the forefront of fashion and design. Aware of his disparate influence, in 1992 Shawn gave an interview in which he stated "Everybody calls it surf wear, or urban street wear, or surf street... I don't name it, and I don't name it on purpose."
