The Umbro brand is known especially to football fans: The company is a well-known manufacturer of sporting goods and has been one of the most important suppliers of football clubs since its foundation. Umbro was founded in 1924 by brothers Harold and Wallace Humphreys in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England. The company name is quasi a suitcase word from "Humphreys Brothers". The two brothers made their debut in the 1934 FA Cup Final – in two different ways, as both teams – Portsmouth and Manchester City – made their debut in Umbro. Since that moment the brand has been firmly linked to football and continues to serve as equipment supplier to numerous international clubs.
Umbro products: from jerseys to football shoes
As a manufacturer of sporting goods, Umbro clearly focuses on football equipment, i.e.: jerseys, shorts and socks are produced as well as goalkeeper gloves and balls. The first football shoe was launched on the Brazilian market, soon competing with the more expensive Adidas products. Even today, shoes for footballers, who stand out above all for their lightness, are still part of the Umbro range. Apart from that, the brand also produces clothing and accessories that have nothing to do with football – for example T-shirts, crewnecks and hoodies, jackets and sweatpants or socks and scarves.
Umbro, Nike and Iconix
>>> mehr InfoThe company is no longer owned by the Humphreys Brothers or their descendants: In 2008 it was acquired by Nike until the brand was sold to the Iconix Brand Group four years later, in 2012. During this time Umbro lost its contract as outfitter for the English FA teams to Nike, but became a partner of the Serbian and Malawian national teams as Iconix brand. The brand is also represented in German football , namely as outfitter for 1st FC Nuremberg.
