As the fourth active player – and the 21st athlete in the history of Nike - Paul George received his own signature model in 2017. The PG 1 took baller hearts by storm and became one of the hottest on-court performers of the year! What a debut!
In 2018, Nike and Paul George want to build on this success story, so they started the next chapter with the PG 2! Together with designer Tony Hardman Paul George defined five rules for his new signature sneaker:
• Take it Beyond Basketball
• Give it an Edge
• Fine Tune, Then Fine Tune Again
• Design for the Next Generation
• Let Performance Do The Talking
Instead of a complete overhaul, the very popular PG 1 was to be the basis for the PG 2. The PG 2 -which is perfectly tailored to Paul Georges' Two-Way Game- relies on a high quality and comfortable material selection. The upper, made of mesh and suede, provides optimal ventilation and durability, with maximum comfort. The close-fitting profile in combination with two "half-straps" on the forefoot give a firm lockdown. This is complemented by a Flywire loop on the mid-food to avoid any "deadspace". For the PG 2, Paul George deliberately renounced a big single strap (like on the PG 1) to create a more efficient and minimalistic design. In addition, the new model has a "classic" tongue for an easier entry.
Cushoning-wise, Nike chose the same setup because it perfectly matches PG's aggressive full-court style of play: a Nike Zoom Air unit under the forefoot combined with a Phylon midsole for lightweight, responsive cushioning. Compared to the PG 1, however, the Zoom Air unit has grown to 10mm thickness (PG 1: 8mm) and sits now directly under the forefoot - Bounce, Bounce, Bounce! Traction is provided by the soft rubberized "wave" outsole, which reflects PG's passion for fishing. Details such as the mentions of his parents on the heels, as well as his jersey number on the Achilles tendon, complete the design and make the PG 2 a must-have!
