A Classic That Needs No Reinvention

Some sneakers have to earn their story first. Others have always had it. The Air Jordan 3 Retro 'True Blue' belongs to the second category. No invented concept, no retrospectively added theme, but simply one of the original colourways with which it all began.

In 1988, the Air Jordan 3 was launched in four colourways, and 'True Blue' was there from the start. While other models wait years to be called special, this shoe carried its prestige from day one of its existence. At KICKZ, we're hugely excited about the comeback of this sneaker icon.

The Shoe That Saved Nike

To understand why the Air Jordan 3 holds such a special position, you have to go back to 1987. The Air Jordan 2 had failed to meet expectations, and Michael Jordan was toying with the idea of leaving Nike. It was designer Tinker Hatfield who averted the disaster. With his design for the Air Jordan 3, he convinced MJ to stay with Nike, simultaneously integrating three elements that had never appeared on any Jordan model before.

  • For the first time, the Air cushioning was visible in the sole.

  • For the first time, the famous elephant print adorned the overlays, inspired by an animal print sofa that Hatfield had discovered in Jordan's house.

  • And for the first time, the Jumpman logo appeared on an Air Jordan, derived from a legendary photo of MJ from 1984.

Without the Air Jordan 3, the brand as we know it today probably wouldn't exist at all.

'True Blue': One of Four Original Colourways

When the Air Jordan 3 debuted in January 1988, it did so in four versions: 'White Cement', 'Black Cement', 'Fire Red' and 'True Blue'. Whilst MJ wore the 'White Cement' version at the legendary 1988 Slam Dunk Contest, which drew particular attention to it, 'True Blue' was part of the story from the beginning, just somewhat quieter in tone.

That's precisely where the appeal of this colourway lies. It never had to prove itself through a special name or invented symbolism. Its legitimacy comes solely from the year of its debut. After the initial release, 'True Blue' retros were celebrated in 2001, 2009, 2011 and most recently in 2016. Since then, it had been quiet in the USA, until now: On 18th July 2026, the Air Jordan 3 'True Blue' returns in its original OG version.

Elephant, Air and Jumpman: The Design in Detail

Visually, the 'True Blue' remains completely true to its roots. The upper in bold blue is framed by grey elephant print overlays on the toe box and heel area, that very detail which made the Air Jordan 3 so unique in the first place. The white midsole provides contrast and makes the blue appear even clearer, whilst fine red accents on the Jumpman logo and details provide the necessary pop.

On the tongue sits the Jumpman emblem, here in Fire Red, a deliberate reference to the original colours from 1988. The heel shows the visible Air unit, still one of the most defining features of this model. The outsole combines white and blue with the classic traction pattern that provided grip on the court nearly forty years ago.

From Court to Street

The Air Jordan 3 was designed as a performance shoe, but since its on-court days has long since evolved into a streetwear cornerstone that's essential in practically every sneaker collection. Unlike louder, bolder colourways, 'True Blue' integrates surprisingly effortlessly into everyday life. With light denim it looks clean and understated, with white basics the blue sets a clear but not overwhelming accent.

This makes the shoe versatile without losing recognition value. It works in the office just as well as at the weekend, on court just as well as strolling through the city. It's precisely this balance between statement and everyday wearability that has kept the Air Jordan 3 relevant for decades.
